More on Homeopathy?

Samuel Hahnemann (1755 – 1843) began his work with a centuries-old healing method in 1770. He laid the foundation for a complete system of medicine based on similia similibus curentur ('like' cures 'like'). Hahnemann refined his work through careful clinical experiments. Homeopathy should not be confused with nutritional therapy or herbal medicine; it has it is a complete system of medicine distinct unto itself. Homeopathy works with The Law of Similars, which is based on the observation that the specific medicine most curative for a patient will be the one that is able to cause a pattern of symptoms similar to the symptoms from which the patient is suffering. A Homeopathic practitioner must understand the body in both health and disease. He or she must have a thorough grasp of homeopathic philosophy, case-taking, case analysis and Homeopathic Materia Medica, and the ability to recognize daily obstructions to cure that are found in the diet and lifestyle of their patients.

Homeopathy is for Everyone

Homeopathic Practitioners believe in treating each person as a whole – body, mind, and spirit – and believe that all symptoms are inter-related. The prescription, or remedy choice, is thus based on ALL of the symptoms you are experiencing.

Homeopathy is safe and gentle and can be used to effectively treat our furry companions, children, and adults (including pregnant and nursing mothers). There are no adverse effects or suppression with homeopathy because it supports the body's own healing mechanisms.

People often seek homeopathic treatment for illnesses and conditions with which they have been diagnosed, yet many people choose homeopathy when they suffer from pain or discomfort but diagnostic tests show no abnormalities. Others come simply because they feel generally unwell or lack energy. The healing effects of homeopathy are practically limitless, and as such, homeopathy is a wonderful treatment option for everyone.

How Does it Work?

Homeopathy is a truly holistic approach to health and healing — one that puts the emphasis on the patient rather than the disease. Homeopathy recognizes that each person responds uniquely to his or her illness and to the environment. The Classical Homeopathic Method seeks to discover the unique characteristics that mark each individual case of illness; in order to do so, a very thorough case-taking procedure essential.

A single homeopathic medicine is carefully selected after the initial case-taking (normally the first visit lasts from 1.5 – 2 hours) and is based on the symptom similarity to the characteristics of the patient and his or her illness. The similarity of the remedy and symptoms presented allows the homeopathic remedy to touch the deep root of disease and allows the body's innate healing abilities to take over. Since homeopathy acts upon the constitution as a whole, people who become well through homeopathy also finds improvements in their overall health and wellbeing.

Homeopathic Medicines

Homeopathic medicines (called remedies) are derived from plants, animals, minerals, metals, acids, alkalis, venoms and diseased human tissue.

The majority of homeopathic remedies commonly used are plant derivatives. In fact it is widely known that homeopaths adopted the pharmacopoeia of the herbalist in many countries and cultures; although homeopathic medicines do not resemble herbal medicines in any way.

Homeopathic medicines are manufactured through a multi-step process of serial dilution and succession, or trituration, by which the inner medicinal power of a crude substance is released or increased. The higher the dilution - the more powerful the remedy. In addition, the dilutions make it possible to use poisonous substances safely.

What is the difference between Homeopathic & Naturopathic Medicine?

People often wonder what the difference is between naturopathic medicine and homeopathic medicine. The main differentiating factor between the two is in their scope of medicine. Homeopathy is a discipline in itself, but it is often practiced within the scope of naturopathy. Naturopathic doctors have training in many modalities such as homeopathy, acupuncture, botanical medicine, nutrition, lifestyle counseling, and hydrotherapy. However, like acupuncture, nutrition, or Traditional Chinese Medicine, homeopathy may be pursued as an independent focus. A homeopathic practitioner is a specialist in the area of homeopathy.

How long will I need to take my homeopathic medicine?

Homeopathy is far different from any conventional medication you will take. You will not need to take a homeopathic medicine forever nor does the homeopathic medicine do the 'curing'....technically it tells your body what to do to cure itself! A message of sorts. So the homeopathic remedy gives your body a message to stop 'acting up' and heal.

Analogy: Parents teach their children how to do things so that they become self-sufficient adults. Homeopathy teaches your body how to correct itself ~ how to HEAL.

The most important task a homeopathic practitioner does, is select a homeopathic remedy that matches your individual symptom expression. So in reality, homeopathy is unbiased. It does not need a disease name. For instance, even if you report that you have gall bladder inflammation, your homeopath will still asked all the same questions and base remedy selection on your symptom presentation. The least amount of medicine to help you heal is dispensed. Less is more. Repeating a dose of the homeopathic medicine is not needed unless the body has not fully healed itself. Your homeopath needs to monitor you so that you know when to take another dose or to change remedies. A commitment to this process is needed.
